Berlin has been conducting talks with its NATO allies, the US and Turkey to ensure the continued civilian evacuations from the Kabul airport. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas announced the measures in Berlin on Monday.
"We will have to keep discussing that with the Taliban and are doing so because they will have to play a special role in that," added Maas.
The announcement came after an Afghan security guard was killed earlier on Monday during a firefight at the Kabul airport.

SOT, Heiko Maas, German Foreign Minister (German): "The situation at and around the airport (in Kabul) got even more chaotic in the last hours. The situation is still dangerous and that is why we recommend not to come to the airport by yourself because we cannot guarantee that, because of the situation, people can enter the military part of the airport. That of course makes the evacuations more difficult. We will use every option and there are always new ones arising, to bring Germans and endangered Afghans into the airport."
"We are in talks with the U.S. and Turkey in order to keep the Kabul airport operational to make civil evacuations of these people possible. We will have to keep discussing that with the Taliban and are doing so because they will have to play a special role in that."
