World Today reports on pressure on the US to delay its pull-out from Afghanistan, Russia flexing its muscles in the arms trade and Ukraine celebrating the 30th anniversary of its independence and recognition by its closest neighbour Poland. Maria Piechowska from the Polish Institute for Foreign Affairs argues that Ukrainian independence was a major boon for Poland and that the two countries now share common painful experiences of Russian expansionism. She feels that the Crimean Platform initiative has succeeded in keeping the issue of annexation of Crimea alive while the Normandy Format has been unsatisfactory for Ukraine and should be replace by US and EU participation rather than Germany and France.
