Afghan trumpeter sounds Taps on 9-11

The National World War I Memorial and Taps for Veterans was honored to welcome Ahmad Baset Azizi on Saturday September 11 to the memorial to sound Taps in commemoration of 9-11

Baset was a young man in Kabul, Afghanistan who wanted to study the trumpet. But western music was forbidden and he had to hide his passion for the horn. He was able to contact David Bilger of the Philadelphia Orchestra and set up lessons via Sykpe. Eventually Baset came to the United States and studied at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan and then with Steve Leisring at the University of Kansas.

Baset, along with Bilger and Leisring were in town last weekend for a concert with The United States Army Band. They participated in a wreath ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on 9-11 and then came over to the memorial to sound Taps.

It was a real pleasure to meet this young man and we wish him all the best on his endeavors.
