Energy ministers of four Arab states set up a roadmap to supply Lebanon with Egyptian natural gas via Jordan and Syria to help boost its electricity production during a meeting in Amman on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by the Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources Bassam Tohme, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tariq al-Mulla and Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Raymond Ghajar.

"Meetings were held between the technical groups and their excellencies (ministers) to develop an action plan or roadmap for the delivery of gas to Lebanon, which includes reviewing agreements and ensuring the readiness of the infrastructure from Egypt to Lebanon,” Zawati explained.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum stressed the importance of fully checking the gas pipeline after more than ten years of interruption.

In turn, the Syrian Minister of Energy pointed out that Damascus has repaired the gas pipeline during the war years, adding that the pipeline is ready to operate in Syrian territory.

Raymond Ghajar expressed hope that imported gas would help to generate about 450 megawatts of electricity, which would lift the burdens of the energy sector in Lebanon.

The Lebanese government is currently working with the World Bank to secure financing for Egyptian gas supplements.

SOT, Hala Zawati, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (Arabic): “Thank God, in the morning, meetings were held between the technical groups and their excellencies (ministers) to develop an action plan or roadmap for the delivery of gas to Lebanon, which includes reviewing agreements and ensuring the readiness of the infrastructure from Egypt to Lebanon.”

SOT, Tariq al-Mulla, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (Arabic): “We need to support our brothers in Lebanon by supplying natural gas to help during the crisis that the Lebanese people are currently facing. Thank God, today a very good preliminary meeting was held with various technical groups from all sides to reaffirm the infrastructure readiness agreement, in order to pump Egyptian gas again after its interruption during the past ten years, so we have to check the entire pipeline network and all private gas facilities.”

SOT, Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Raymond Ghajar (Arabic): “It is the first step through which we can benefit, and if God willing soon [we will be able to use] the amount of natural gas to generate about 450 megawatts, in the plant, which is the only one equipped to run on gas. In the future, it is possible to import electricity from Jordan also through Syria after repairing some sections that were damaged after the war in Syria.”

SOT, Bassam Tohme, Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources (Arabic): “In Syria, the Arab gas pipeline became part of the internal network of Syria, it was directly repaired after it was sabotaged, so the pipeline is ready now as it wasn't left [during the war]. It is clear that the pipeline was attacked and it also cost a lot of money [to repair]. There is a security company guarding this pipeline, and therefore the line is practically ready in the Syrian territory. Regarding the second question of what benefits Syria and Jordan are getting, there is a gas transfer agreement, and that agreement clarifies the details of the fees required for the transfer process.”
