Poetry Town Carrick-on-Suir Launch

Carrick-on-Suir Poetry Town launch and Town Poem unveiling

We are delighted to welcome you to an evening of music and poetry, on the opening night of Poetry Town, for the unveiling of the Town Poem for Carrick-on-Suir, by Poetry Town Poet Laureate Billy Fenton. This launch event was recorded in the beautiful surroundings of the first floor gallery at the Tudor Artisan Hub arts collective.

Alongside the reading of the specially commissioned Town Poem by Billy Fenton, we will be joined by special guest, the internationally renowned poet Michael Coady, who will read from his work, in the Seán Healy Memorial Library, Carrick-on-Suir. We will also have poems written and read by Carrick-on-Suir writers, Mary McGrath; Raika Tienert; Heather Wall; Ann Dempsey and Margaret O’Brien.

Renowned composer and performer, Marian Ingoldsby plays a selection of music from Irish composers.

The pieces are:
‘At the Outset’, by Marian Ingoldsby
‘Nocturne in B flat no 5’, by John Field
‘Undulations’, by Marian Ingoldsby
‘The Plains of Boyne’, by Micheal O'Suilleabhan
‘Haiku no 3’, by Eric Sweeney
‘Slievenamon’, Arr. by Marian Ingoldsby

The event was filmed and edited by Pete Smith.

Poetry Town is an initiative of Poetry Ireland in partnership with Local Authority Arts Offices and is made possible with funding from the Arts Council of Ireland’s Open Call funding, and is also supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

We wish to thank Poetry Ireland, and the Poetry Town team, for initiating this nationwide project and the County Tipperary Arts Officer, Melanie Scott, for nominating Carrick-on-Suir as the 2021 Poetry Town for Co. Tipperary. We are also grateful for the support of librarian Carol Delaney and the staff of the Sean Healy Memorial Library.

We especially wish to acknowledge the generous contributions of both the writing, music and visual arts community in Carrick-on-Suir and its hinterland, and also the people, organisations and the business community of the town.

A sincere thank you to everyone who played a part in helping us to show what an imaginative approach to the arts, to creativity and to poetry can look like.
