Some Hong Kong residents have found ways to bypass the government’s “Leave Home Safe” Covid-19 contact-tracing app.Two Hongkongers going by the names Birdy and Bu have set up a private social media picnic group called ‘Leave Home Wild’, where members order takeaway and go on a picnic with friends to avoid using the government app, which registers their visits at various public premises. Since its launch in December 2021, the group has grown from 50 members to more than 6,000. Growing public mistrust in the government, sparked by a crackdown on anti-government protesters in 2019 and the subsequent passing of a national security law, has been blamed for the city’s sluggish uptake of Covid-19 vaccines and hesitancy in using the official contact-tracing app. The app, however, is expanding its functions and will soon feature a QR code function linking a person’s Covid-19 vaccination or exemption record.
