Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says “it’s incredibly dangerous" to nominate pay rises "to the percentage point".
It comes after Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese’s promised to increase the minimum wage by 5.1 per cent.
“If everybody’s pay goes up, then prices will go up too and suddenly that extra pay you think you’ve got is just being chewed up in higher prices – in fact, those prices might be even higher again,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“That’s where you end up into an inflationary spiral. That’s what we’ve got to try to avoid now.”
