Super Simple Influencing Technique | #shorts

Influencing really is an art. Whether you realize it or not, the ability to influence others is a central part of your job. You might need to rally support for initiatives, empower your team to perform, or be able to persuade others to get on board with a new perspective… influence is central.

And yet, it’s something many claim to struggle with.

The thing is, it’s not as difficult as some think it is.

A really simple starting point if you want to elevate your influence (which also doubles as a useful negotiation tool) is a technique called the ‘OPEN DOOR’.

If you’re ever presented with an unrealistic demand, instead of arguing against it, try this…

1️⃣ Start by framing your request with an ‘Open Door’:
👉“Just suppose…
👉“What if…”
👉“I wonder whether…“

2️⃣ Then, share the consequences of that.

3️⃣ Offer a better solution using an ‘Open Door’

4️⃣ Share the benefit of that.

Simple!

It allows you to explore other possible options, while keeping it conditional without you committing to anything.
It’s also a useful tool to help the other person see a different course of action and to help them visualize the options.

For example:
Let’s say your boss gives you more work yet you’re at complete capacity.

Try:
1️⃣ “Just suppose I did take on this new project…” (‘Open Door’)
2️⃣ “…it would mean I need to push back X and Y so they’d both be delayed.” (Consequence)
3️⃣ “What if we brought on two extra resources initially to get bulk of the work done early, and delegate the remaining tasks?” (Better Solution using 'Open Door’)
4️⃣ “None of us would miss other project deadlines and we always have a better outcome when there’s a team.” (Benefit)

Have you ever tried something like this before? How did it go? 👇
