Plausible T. Rex Roars

Plausible T. Rex Roars

Throughout the history of cinema, Tyrannosaurus Rex has iconically been depicted fiercely roaring at its rivals. While very awesome, this unfortunately conflicts with science as dinosaurs were not known to have vocal cords like mammals do, so in all likelihood the T. Rex wouldn’t have roared the way it does in Jurassic Park.

Modern speculation has taken the T. Rex’s vocalizations in some interesting directions, such as a barely audible low frequency rumble that would’ve been felt more so than heard. Creepy!

However, I’m still not convinced the Rex lacked ANY sort of "traditional" loud vocalizations, so with this video I've set out to create some scientifically plausible "roars" for the T. Rex, constructed using sounds from some of the animal's modern vocal cordless relatives such as alligators, geese, and vultures. Some hisses and breaths from other animals are included in the mix as well, but I never broke my rule of NO vocal cord-produced sounds. Dinosaurs also lacked syrinxes which most birds have, so I even made sure to only use samples from birds without syrinxes.

The result is my own personal hypothesis of what the T. Rex may have sounded like, in what I hope is a cool compromise between Hollywood and science.
