Main Talk: Surveying the Non Religious

Speaker : Jacqui Frost

Musician : Ermelinda Cuellar

Speaker Bio : Jacqui Frost is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Religion and Public Life Program and the Department of Sociology at Rice University. For more info go to https://www.jacquifrost.com/ Her research is grounded in cultural sociology with a focus on the causes and consequences of religious disaffiliation in the United States. Her dissertation, Modern but Not Meaningless: Nonreligious Cultures and Communities in the U.S., is an ethnographic case study of an “atheist church” called the Sunday Assembly and the ways that nonreligious people are creating new cultures and communities without religion.

Musician Bio:
Born to Peruvian parents in Texas, Cuellar is well-known to Houston audiences playing both jazz and Latin music in the region. Her background, bandstand experience, and training in opera result in vocals with clear intonation, rhythmically precise improvisations, and passionate story-telling in both English and Spanish. Listeners remark that her vocal quality is reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald. The authentic Latin grooves provided by some of Texas’ top musicians provide a heartbeat for this album that she hopes will “lighten your soul”.
She has played at Houston Oasis many a time. Her latest album is called What a Difference a Day Made.
